Derek Shapton
Derek Shapton is a fine-art and assignment photographer and filmmaker based in Toronto. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, is a winner of multiple National Magazine Awards in both Portrait Photography and Photojournalism, and has been featured in numerous editions of Applied Arts, the Communication Arts Photography Annual and American Photography. “Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Ghost, Insinger, SK” is from the series “Last Stop”, a visual feature and photo essay commissioned by Walrus magazine. For the assignment, Derek travelled on the final Greyhound bus between Saskatoon SK and Brandon MB before the service was shut down, photographing in each town on the route; a region of Canada very similar to parts of the Ukrainian heartland and where a large population of Ukrainian immigrants settled over a century ago.
